The “Blason des vins de France” is a ballad written by the French man-at-arms Pierre d’Anché (c. 1430/1445-after 1492). It’s an example of a geographical list that conveys representations of folk geography in 15th-century France. The source is well-known to wine historians, but a critical edition of the text has never been made: by correcting the text, it reveals a precise mental representation of the wines of France, classified by region and judged according to their quality. Its 69 toponyms provide a portrait of the imaginary world of wine at that time, in the context of the emergence of the French Nation-State. The poem is thus an important milestone in the evolution of wine culture in the Late Middle Ages.
