Par sa localisation, le vignoble brivadois est situé en périphérie du vignoble auvergnat, lui-même considéré comme un « petit vignoble », ce qui peut expliquer une certaine discrétion dans l’historiographie. Si tout le monde ou presque possède quelques arpents de vigne, seules les familles les plus aisées sont en capacité d’assurer la production de vin. Celle-ci répond surtout à une logique d’autoconsommation et est aussi destinée à une clientèle venue des montagnes environnantes aux attentes plus réduites. Ces dernières se traduisent par une quête de quantité et non de qualité, identifiable à la pauvreté du matériel vinaire utilisé. This article focuses on the conditions of wine production in Brioude in the eighteenth century, with a marked interest in its spatial and material setting and its socio-economic actors. Due to its location, the Brivadois vineyard is located on the outskirts of the Auvergne vineyards, which is itself considered a "small vineyard", which may explain a certain discretion in historiography. Although almost everyone owns a few acres of vines, only the wealthiest families are able to ensure the production of wine. This is mainly based on a logic of self-consumption and is also intended for customers from the surrounding mountains with lower expectations.
