In his examination of the links between geocriticism and geophilosophy, the author explores the geophilosophical nature of Deleuzian texts that are not explicitly geophilosophical. He revisits the Deleuzian foundations of geocriticism and the way in which his own relationship with the thinker has evolved over time, having interrupted his reading of Deleuze for nearly two decades. He discusses the integration into his work of an intermedial dimension that complements an initial effort focused primarily on questions of interdisciplinarity. In this context, he pays particular attention to Deleuze’s reflections on the visual arts—his essay on Francis Bacon, as well as his seminar Sur la peinture, which David Lapoujade has brilliantly transcribed for Éditions de Minuit (2023).After a brief account of a pilgrimage to the cemetery of Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, near Limoges, where Deleuze is buried, the author accompanies the philosopher’s spirit to the tennis courts to better understand how, through a highly personal interpretation of John McEnroe’s serve, Deleuze had grappled with the relationship between Egyptian and Greek art—between the transition from the mineral to the organic, and the consideration of spatial depth and its representation.

This paper explores some interdisciplinary perspectives for the geocritical approach by linking it to further, more or less related concepts and paradigms: phantom borders, geo-narratives, cognitive linguistics, discourse linguistics. The elaboration of (cognitive and discourse) linguistic perspectives for the geocritical approach appears particularly fruitful, not least because, from a geocritical perspective, literature maintains a reciprocal relationship with reality through language. The contribution contextualizes geocriticism within a continuum which is central both to this method of literary analysis and to the concept of phantom borders. This continuum stretches from one pole centered on landscapes, referents and all kind of elements pertaining to materiality, to another pole that relates to the discursive level, and around which various discourses and (literary) texts circulate—discourses and texts that are informed by (social and cultural) representations, stereotypes and further socially shared structures of knowledge. The geo-narrative is situated between these two poles. In addition to the theoretical and methodological potential offered by linguistic approaches—particularly with regard to understanding the processes at work at the discursive and conceptual levels within the continuum—the aim of this paper is to reflect on how these different disciplines and paradigms, whilst certainly pursuing distinct objectives, can enrich one another through a spatializing approach that is ultimately also inspired by geophilosophy.

The space of contemporary French novelisation is to be conceived on the basis of cinematic images. Any literary novelisation practice aims to reshape the space shown on screen, to represent it: it seeks to make the visible space of cinema readable. Ensuring the transition from one space to another, in a constant back-and-forth, implies an opening, that is, the transgression of literary space towards an exterior, an outside constituted by cinematic territories. It is precisely in relation to this modulation between an outside and an inside—whose encounter it reflects—that the bi-medial narrative structure of novelisation crystallises. Cinephile, this literary practice enters into a dialogue with the visual and finds its place in a relational dimension: in a hybrid and heterogeneous field, characterised by a certain in-between. Being in-between, being on the edge and thus disrupting the stable and traditional “logic of territorial divisions” between different media in order to transcend them, reconciling them in a logic of ‘and… and’. In order to grasp the modulation that allows the film narrative to become the pretext of a literary practice inspired by it, the article aims to explore how the narrator of the novelisation, who begins to retrace the space framed by the cinematic image with the intention of giving an account of it through literary means, ultimately turns to and invests in the off-screen space of cinema.

Over time, Deleuze and Guattari developed a program that they described in turn as vitalist, materialist, and then naturalist, in reference to German Naturphilosophie. Starting with A Thousand Plateaus, this program, which aims to place nature and culture within the same continuum, led to a new way of mapping space by deconstructing the notion of territory, and to a new way of redrawing it: lines of flight, deterritorialization, nomadism, etc. The aim of this article is to present this philosophy of nature in order to assess the legacy it has left on ecological thought, but above all the possibilities it opens up for ecocriticism and geocriticism.

This article asks what it means to map within the context of Deleuze-Guattarian geophilosophy and geocriticism, understood as a literary approach to space grounded in the relation between thought, land, and territory. It examines how the geocritical and geophilosophical rethinking of territory, drawing on Deleuze and Guattari, opens the way to an ecological cartography capable of making sensitive interactions visible. By mobilizing the notions of deterritorialization, rhizome, fold, plane, and in-between, the aim is to move beyond a conception of territory as immobility and to consider it as relational dynamism, traversed by flows and affects. At the crossroads of geophilosophy, geocriticism (Bertrand Westphal), and approaches arising from the "spatial turn" in geography, we propose to think of the map not as an instrument of control, but as a perceptive and critical device. The article advances the hypothesis of a counter-cartography attentive to sensitive interactions and interdependencies between environments, practices, and affects. The map thus becomes a relational and experiential tool, capable of conveying the living complexity of contemporary territories. This sensitive ecological cartography makes perceptible the assemblages between environments, bodies, narratives, and imaginaries, and contributes to reconfiguring the ways in which we inhabit a world undergoing ecological, political, and symbolic transformation.

Deleuze and Guattari’s geophilosophy played a decisive role in what, from the late 1960s and 1970s onward, came to be identified as the “spatial turn” in the humanities. Within this broader reorientation, cartography, engaging in its own deconstructionist trajectory, has drawn significantly on the highly innovative theorization of the map proposed by the two thinkers, particularly in A Thousand Plateaus, where the map is conceived as rhizomatic, non‑mimetic, and intrinsically deterritorialized and deterritorializing. Conversely, literary works and literary scholarship—including geocritical approaches as well as methodologies more directly grounded in the epistemological and aesthetic functions of mapping—stand to benefit from the performative force of maps and their generative capacity for producing forms. This article aims to sketch several avenues for examining the diverse variations through which literature mobilizes its “cartographic gaze”.

This article is part of contemporary reflections on interculturality and transculturality, conceived as critical alternatives to the logics of homogenization characteristic of modernity and globalization. It proposes to analyse these dynamics from a spatial perspective, granting a central place to the sea—and more specifically to the Mediterranean—conceived both as a material reality and as a symbolic construction that fosters a dynamic dialogue between lands and cultures. Intercultural dialogue is thus approached not as a stable state, but as a dynamic process, grounded in continuous exchanges between societies in constant interaction, embracing instability, incompleteness, mobility, and the diasporic dimension. Through the analysis of works from contemporary art and from French and Catalan literature, the article highlights both the tensions and the potentialiaties inherent in spaces of cultural contact. The sea emerges as a fluid yet structuring space for the lands that border it, capable of transcending political, cultural, and administrative boundaries and of transforming the Other into a We. This approach aligns with a heterarchical vision of territories, in which they are organized peripherally around a maritime centre, as a vector of circulation and interweaving among societies. The article draws on theoretical references from literary geography and geophilosophy to examine works by authors who seek to move beyond established national and cultural frameworks, offering a sensitive and transcultural vision of the Mediterranean space, conceived as a privileged site of dialogue and relation.

Artist and poet Hortense Gauthier’s “geopoetic actions” (Poèmes en marche, 2020, Rituels pour le futur, 2025) open up reflection on a possible creative geophilosophy of space: her augmented performances invite us to reconsider landscapes, experiences of movement, and perceptions of the everyday human or natural environment. Through the notions of technotopias and techno-heterotopias, we first examine the imaginary relationship to physical geographical reality through digital experience (the technotopia), and then spaces constructed outside the digital network - this “smooth” space that tends to homogenize or control space, as opposed to the “striated” space (Deleuze and Guattari). Geopoetic practice thus allows us to open up heterotopic spaces, themselves potentially augmented by technological tools, but in order to reappropriate them. Drawing on Bertrand Westphal’s geocritical reading, we will read Deleuze and Guattari’s deterritorialization and nomadism in light of Gauthier’s poetic and performative hikes, and vice versa.

This article examines urban navigation technologies, GPS and mapping applications, not as simple tools for mobility, but as operators that transform regimes of spatiality. Drawing on the work of Claude Raffestin, Tim Ingold, and the Deleuzian framework developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, the article shows how these devices reconfigure territorial structures, circulation dynamics, and forms of experience. By producing optimized trajectories, they tend to replace wayfaring with a logic of execution, in which space is anticipated and calculated in advance of lived experience. This transformation also affects regimes of enunciation. Reinterpreted through the concept of “minor literature”, algorithmic navigation appears as a form of distributed collective enunciation, in which individual trajectories are immediately captured, aggregated, and reintegrated into the system, contributing to the regulation of spatial behaviors. However, this capture remains incomplete. Drawing on the counterpoint proposed by Georges Perec, the article highlights the persistence of the infra-ordinary as an irreducible dimension of spatial experience. Hesitations, adjustments, and tensions between algorithmic prescription and material environment mark the points at which space resists its computational reduction. The algorithmic regime of spatiality thus emerges as a form of capture that is always unfinished.

When theorizing geocriticism, Bertrand Westphal refers mainly to Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari. By first going through Georges Perec, the aim here is to show that the work of Henri Lefebvre also plays an important role in it, and offers fruitful critical perspectives notably in terms of differentiating power and decentering.

This article offers a geophilosophical and geocritical reading of the novel Iochka by Cristian Fulaș (2022), examining the ways in which the body and space are reconfigured in the aftermath of extreme experiences of dehumanization. Starting from an opening scene of contact—a hand placed on a face—it highlights the emergence of a relation to the other that breaks with the logics of violence and separation produced by dispositifs of power. From a perspective inspired by Michel Foucault, unreason appears as the effect of an excess of power exerted upon bodies, leading the subject to withdraw into a silent margin of the world. The article nonetheless shows that this withdrawal is not purely negative: it constitutes the condition for a sensitive reconfiguration of one’s relation to space and to others. Drawing on the concepts of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, it analyzes the shift from a world structured by fear—where the other is perceived as a “possibility of a frightening world”—to a relational space grounded in openness and co-presence. Bertrand Westphal’s geocritical approach then makes it possible to conceive of the body as space and to grasp how affects modulate distance: where fear deepens it, love and friendship suspend it. The study thus advances the hypothesis of an affective spatiality in which, at the intersection of the political and the sensible, the conditions for a shared “world-making” are re-enacted.

This article proposes a conceptual reconstruction of spatiality in the thought of Édouard Glissant, conceived as a situated relational ontology. In contrast to metric paradigms and models of abstract spatiality, space is defined here as an operative condition of thought, the imagination and subjectivation, according to a logic of unfolding into the world. Through the notions of Relation, creolisation and opacity, Glissantian spatiality appears as dynamic, non-totalizable, and dependent on geo-historical configurations marked by the slave trade and colonisation. The use of Deleuze-Guattarian operators (rhizome, assemblage, smooth/striated space) functions as a formal analyser of multiplicities, whilst revealing their limitations in the face of Glissant’s demand for historical determination and an ethics of the Diverse. The article thus argues that archipelagic thought reconfigures spatiality into a situated productive exteriority, where relation, memory and heterogeneity become constitutive of thought.

This article reads Ottó Tolnai’s (1940–2025) work through Deleuze and Guattari’s geophilosophy, while engaging Blanchot’s literary space. It shows how Tolnai turns the space of literary inoperativity and the neutrality of writing into an intensive field in which literature produces milieus (houses) and their inhabitants (aesthetic figures), while capturing forces that Deleuze and Guattari call “the earth.” It further examines how he renders the post-Yugoslav border into a sensible concept and the central operator of fabulation in a Deleuzo-Guattarian sense. Fabulation deterritorializes forms and thickens the world. Tolnai circulates heterogeneous materials to compose the sensible texture of a border that is always “in the middle.” His work thus appears as a form of cartography that is both extensive and intensive: a rhizomatic space of multiplicities where literature and painting converge, and where Blanchot’s notion of withdrawal is transformed into an active process of world-thickening.
