This article reads Ottó Tolnai’s (1940–2025) work through Deleuze and Guattari’s geophilosophy, while engaging Blanchot’s literary space. It shows how Tolnai turns the space of literary inoperativity and the neutrality of writing into an intensive field in which literature produces milieus (houses) and their inhabitants (aesthetic figures), while capturing forces that Deleuze and Guattari call “the earth.” It further examines how he renders the post-Yugoslav border into a sensible concept and the central operator of fabulation in a Deleuzo-Guattarian sense. Fabulation deterritorializes forms and thickens the world. Tolnai circulates heterogeneous materials to compose the sensible texture of a border that is always “in the middle.” His work thus appears as a form of cartography that is both extensive and intensive: a rhizomatic space of multiplicities where literature and painting converge, and where Blanchot’s notion of withdrawal is transformed into an active process of world-thickening.

This article asks what it means to map within the context of Deleuze-Guattarian geophilosophy and geocriticism, understood as a literary approach to space grounded in the relation between thought, land, and territory. It examines how the geocritical and geophilosophical rethinking of territory, drawing on Deleuze and Guattari, opens the way to an ecological cartography capable of making sensitive interactions visible. By mobilizing the notions of deterritorialization, rhizome, fold, plane, and in-between, the aim is to move beyond a conception of territory as immobility and to consider it as relational dynamism, traversed by flows and affects. At the crossroads of geophilosophy, geocriticism (Bertrand Westphal), and approaches arising from the "spatial turn" in geography, we propose to think of the map not as an instrument of control, but as a perceptive and critical device. The article advances the hypothesis of a counter-cartography attentive to sensitive interactions and interdependencies between environments, practices, and affects. The map thus becomes a relational and experiential tool, capable of conveying the living complexity of contemporary territories. This sensitive ecological cartography makes perceptible the assemblages between environments, bodies, narratives, and imaginaries, and contributes to reconfiguring the ways in which we inhabit a world undergoing ecological, political, and symbolic transformation.

This article offers a geophilosophical and geocritical reading of the novel Iochka by Cristian Fulaș (2022), examining the ways in which the body and space are reconfigured in the aftermath of extreme experiences of dehumanization. Starting from an opening scene of contact—a hand placed on a face—it highlights the emergence of a relation to the other that breaks with the logics of violence and separation produced by dispositifs of power. From a perspective inspired by Michel Foucault, unreason appears as the effect of an excess of power exerted upon bodies, leading the subject to withdraw into a silent margin of the world. The article nonetheless shows that this withdrawal is not purely negative: it constitutes the condition for a sensitive reconfiguration of one’s relation to space and to others. Drawing on the concepts of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, it analyzes the shift from a world structured by fear—where the other is perceived as a “possibility of a frightening world”—to a relational space grounded in openness and co-presence. Bertrand Westphal’s geocritical approach then makes it possible to conceive of the body as space and to grasp how affects modulate distance: where fear deepens it, love and friendship suspend it. The study thus advances the hypothesis of an affective spatiality in which, at the intersection of the political and the sensible, the conditions for a shared “world-making” are re-enacted.

Deleuze and Guattari’s geophilosophy played a decisive role in what, from the late 1960s and 1970s onward, came to be identified as the “spatial turn” in the humanities. Within this broader reorientation, cartography, engaging in its own deconstructionist trajectory, has drawn significantly on the highly innovative theorization of the map proposed by the two thinkers, particularly in A Thousand Plateaus, where the map is conceived as rhizomatic, non‑mimetic, and intrinsically deterritorialized and deterritorializing. Conversely, literary works and literary scholarship—including geocritical approaches as well as methodologies more directly grounded in the epistemological and aesthetic functions of mapping—stand to benefit from the performative force of maps and their generative capacity for producing forms. This article aims to sketch several avenues for examining the diverse variations through which literature mobilizes its “cartographic gaze”.

In his examination of the links between geocriticism and geophilosophy, the author explores the geophilosophical nature of Deleuzian texts that are not explicitly geophilosophical. He revisits the Deleuzian foundations of geocriticism and the way in which his own relationship with the thinker has evolved over time, having interrupted his reading of Deleuze for nearly two decades. He discusses the integration into his work of an intermedial dimension that complements an initial effort focused primarily on questions of interdisciplinarity. In this context, he pays particular attention to Deleuze’s reflections on the visual arts—his essay on Francis Bacon, as well as his seminar Sur la peinture, which David Lapoujade has brilliantly transcribed for Éditions de Minuit (2023).After a brief account of a pilgrimage to the cemetery of Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, near Limoges, where Deleuze is buried, the author accompanies the philosopher’s spirit to the tennis courts to better understand how, through a highly personal interpretation of John McEnroe’s serve, Deleuze had grappled with the relationship between Egyptian and Greek art—between the transition from the mineral to the organic, and the consideration of spatial depth and its representation.
