Sous la Restauration, sa fille Delphine (1804-1855) l’avait remplacée dans les salons mondains où ses poèmes connaissaient un certain succès. Après son mariage avec Émile de Girardin, Delphine devint une romancière, journaliste et salonnière renommée, dont le talent surpassait en tous points celui de sa mère. La relation entre Sophie Gay et sa fille fut trop fusionnelle pour ne pas être conflictuelle, mais elle fut aussi d’une immense richesse affective et intellectuelle. Il s’établit entre la mère et la fille un jeu de miroir littéraire, un « marquage » intertextuel que cet article cherchera à retracer. En m’appuyant sur une correspondance familiale inédite, je propose d’observer, chez Delphine de Girardin, la mise en récit de la relation de filiation. Le rapport à la mère, thème central de toute son œuvre, repose sur une double problématique du don et de l’abandon, féconde refonte du matériau référentiel par l’écriture romanesque. A few years into the Restoration, her daughter Delphine (1804-1855) had taken her place in the Parisian salons where she had become a famous young poet. After her marriage to Émile de Girardin, Delphine became a journalist and a novelist in her own right, surpassing her mother in talent and notoriety. The two women had an intensely close and often difficult relationship, albeit intellectually and emotionally fulfilling. In this article, I will examine intertextual references that bring to light the troubling imagery of the mother/daughter interaction. Using unpublished correspondence between Delphine and her parents, I will examine how the relationship with the mother is based, in her works, on a double bind of maternal love and abandonment.
