Après avoir rappelé brièvement les facteurs susceptibles d’avoir favorisé la publication d’une continuation du Guzmán, cet article s’intéresse à la lecture que Mateo Luján fait de l’œuvre originale et analyse la riposte que Mateo Alemán met en œuvre dans sa propre Seconde Partie. Il s’agit ainsi de montrer que l’influence de la continuation concurrente sur la suite alémanienne ne se borne pas à quelques échos ponctuels, mais que le roman de Luján a vraisemblablement laissé une empreinte plus profonde sur l’œuvre de l’auteur authentique du Guzmán. This work examines the literary interactions between the two parts of the original Guzmán de Alfarache by Mateo Alemán (Madrid, 1599 and Lisbon, 1604) and the apocryphal continuation by Mateo Luján de Sayavedra (Valencia, 1602). After briefly recalling the factors likely to have promoted the publication of a continuation of Guzmán, this article focuses on Mateo Luján’s own reading of the original work, and analyses the response deployed by Mateo Alemán in his own Second Part. The aim of this study is thus to show that the influence of the rival continuation on Alemán’s sequel is not confined to a few isolated echoes, but that Luján’s novel is most likely to have left a deeper mark on the work of Guzmán’s authentic author. Par ‘social’, il ne faut pas seulement entendre le fait que ces deux textes recourent abondamment à la satire des us et coutumes de l’Espagne du XVIe siècle en mettant en scène différents types sociaux, aussi bien plébéiens ou bourgeois qu’aristocrates. En réalité, l’écriture des deux œuvres semble avoir en commun une inclination marquée pour la réflexion sur des valeurs morales et sociales à partir du récit circonstancié et à la première personne des aventures du protagoniste. Néanmoins, le Guzmán de Alfarache paraît délivrer un message encore plus négatif et pessimiste sur la stérilité de la société espagnole et l’inanité des valeurs qui y règnent. This article approaches the social dimensions of the first picaresque novels, Lazarillo de Tormes, published in 1554, and Guzmán de Alfarache written by Mateo Alemán between 1599 and 1604. These texts represent the 16th century Spanish ways and customs in a satirical perspective. Actually, these two novels, based on the narration of a protagonist who speaks in the first person, have something in common: relying on the narration of a single character, they tend to reflect on moral and social values. However, Guzmán de Alfarache seems to deliver a more negative and pessimistic perception of the Spanish society and its amorality.
