Aux péripéties tout extérieures de l’un s’oppose le néant d’une action entièrement centrée sur l’approfondissement de soi, à la veine populaire du premier s’oppose l’élitisme du second. C’est cette tension, féconde puisqu’elle a donné lieu à une nouvelle famille d’œuvres en France, qu’on se propose d’étudier. The French fictional autobiography, which goes from René to Dominique and includes Adolphe or Obermann, seems to be a paradoxical avatar of the picaresque novel. This latter is full of events while the fictional autobiography focuses on the infinitesimal movements of the soul. The first one is popular, opposite to the aristocratic refinement of the other one. The fictional autobiography subverts the basic rules of the picaresque novel. This subversion is interesting in so far has it gave birth to a new family of texts in the 19th century in France.
