Il se propose de déterminer en quoi l'adaptation cinématographique du roman de Heinrich Mann est clairement ancrée dans le contexte est-allemand. Pour cela, le texte aborde dans un premier temps les procédés de la satire dans le film pour ensuite s'interroger sur la cible de cette satire. Dans un troisième temps, il cherche à montrer que l'approche de Staudte relève plus d'une approche diachronique que celle de Heinrich Mann. This text deals with Wolfgang Staudte's film Der Untertan (1951). It tries to show that this cinematographic adaptation of Heinrich Mann's novel is clearly rooted in the east-german context. The article analyses first the processes of the satire in the film and tries to determine what is the target of this satire. A ce cadre temporel étroit correspond un cadre spatial tout aussi restreint, puisque l’essentiel de l’intrigue romanesque se déroule dans une petite ville de province, de telle sorte que la grande histoire ne sert que de toile de fond à la fiction. Cette volonté de se concentrer sur un espace aussi limité pour rendre compte de l’ère wilhelminienne traduit les intentions satiriques de l’auteur qui par ce processus de déformation par réduction fait mieux ressortir le caractère ridicule, brutal, voire odieux des personnages, chargés d’incarner la démesure impérialiste de l’époque. Ainsi cette œuvre de maturité propose-t-elle une belle illustration du ‘sur-réalisme’ (Überrealismus) de Heinrich Mann. Analysis of the historical references in the novel show first of all that Heinrich Mann sets the story’s action in a limited period which goes mainly from the summer of 1892 to the autumn of 1893. This narrow timeframe corresponds with an equally restricted spatial setting, since the plot mostly unfolds in a small provincial town, of the kind which history only uses as a backdrop for fiction. This desire to concentrate on such a small place to recreate the Wilhelminian era conveys the author’s satirical intentions which by this process of distortion through reduction better reveals the ridiculous, brutal or even despicable nature of the characters, used to personify the imperialist excesses of the time.
