Dans les coulisses de l’histoire du roman au XIXe siècle, la correspondance de Manzoni révèle les usages pluriels de la lettre, à la fois pragmatiques, psychologiques et poétiques, mais toujours orientés par un souci de sociabilité qui fait de la conversation entre amis le plus noble des échanges intellectuels : le laboratoire de l’écrivain est aussi le salon d’un honnête homme. Behind nineteenth century’s greatest Italian novel, The Betrothed (1827) by Alessandro Manzoni, lies a complex editorial undertaking as shown by the author’s correspondence: before publishing the novel, the Lombard writer kept seeking help from a wide circle of friends, among which Claude Fauriel, while at the same time his advisors would write to their own acquaintances in order to inform them of Manzoni’s work in progress, thus keeping alive the public’s expectations.
