L’épistolière se constitue, au mépris des normes établies, en écrivain et inscrit dans le champ du littéraire au gré de remaniements et de stratégies d’écriture qui lui sont propres, un échange jusque-là considéré comme source de documents sur les écrivains et la genèse de leurs œuvres. Among the very widespread genre of correspondence between writers, the exchange between Goethe and Bettina Brentano-von Arnim, 35 years younger than he, occupies a unique place. It has not only given rise to two important books – Goethe’s Dichtung und Wahrheit and Bettina’s Goethe’s Briefwechsel mit einem Kinde – but it constitutes in itself a particular case of fictionalization of a real correspondence in the form of a new literary genre, the ‘Briefroman’.
