La structure disjointe du roman, les ruptures dans l’écriture, le brouillage des limites entre les différentes sections ainsi qu’entre personnage et narratrice autobiographique reflètent l’écartèlement de la femme qui se veut aussi écrivaine et la fragilité de sa position. Ecartèlement et fragilité qui la mènent au bord de la folie. Mais la superposition des textes secondaires – brouillons, coupures de journaux, et journal intime – met au centre du roman le travail d’une écriture qui se veut consciemment de femme dans toute sa spécificité contradictoire. The Golden Notebook does give the reader a representation of the woman writer, but it goes further in so far as the presence of the writer is woven into the structure as well as the writing of the text. The five notebooks, the ruptures in style, the blurring of borders between the notebooks and between characters and the autobiographical narrator reflect the way in which a woman writer is torn between the two roles of woman and writer, and the precariousness of her position. A situation that leads her to the verge of madness. But the sum of different secondary texts – rough draughts, fiction, diary – eventually construct a novel about writing, and more specifically a novel about feminine or female writing in all its assumed contradictions. Si nous arrivons à nous faire une idée du processus de composition, les choses deviennent plus difficiles quand il s’agit des choix esthétiques et stylistiques. Nous n’avons en fait que des traces ou des remarques d’ordre général. Quant à l’utilisation des lettres comme d’un laboratoire d’écriture elle est pour ainsi dire non existante dans la correspondance, ou ce qui nous en est parvenu, avec pour exception, le texte non fictionnel majeur de Gaskell, la biographie de Charlotte Brontë. The relationship between Gaskell’s correspondence and the works is an uneasy one. The letters give some information as to what motivates her writing. They throw light on the basic principles behind the author’s narrative principles (as well as on the difficulty to adhere to them). If they are revealing of writer’s fatigue, they are much less so when it comes to the actual writing process. They allow some insight into the compositional process but remain very discreet about aesthetic and stylistic choices, only giving hints of a very general nature. The use of the letters as a sort of writing laboratory is almost non existent in the correspondence as it stands, with the exception of the major non fictional text, The Life of Charlotte Brontë.
