Je n’avais jamais entendu parler de lui, ma famille ayant purement et simplement oublié cet ancêtre traducteur, exilé à Paris puis en Normandie. Je m’intéresse dans cet article à sa trajectoire d’auteur orphelin, ayant perdu son père à l’âge de 4 ans, et dont l’œuvre entière est hantée par le thème de l’inadaptation sociale et le besoin d’une construction de soi en l’absence d’héritage familial. En étudiant le cas d’Auguste Lavallé, je souhaite aussi questionner le poids de l’orphelinage sur le projet littéraire d’un écrivain : peut-on montrer un lien entre le fait d’être orphelin et la littérature ? Et si oui, comment l’envisager, dans le cadre de recherches littéraires ? I accidentally discovered Auguste Lavallé, known as Louis de Hessem, while doing some web research, combining the keywords “writer”, “Saint-Mard” (the Lavallé family’s home village), and “Lavallé”. I had never heard of him; my family had simply forgotten this ancestor, a translator, who was exiled to Paris and then to Normandy. In this article, I focus on his journey as an orphaned author, who lost his father at the age of four, and whose entire work is haunted by the theme of social maladjustment and the need to construct oneself in the absence of a family legacy. By studying the case of Auguste Lavallé, I also wish to question the impact of orphanhood on a writer’s literary project: can we demonstrate a link between being an orphan and literature? And if so, how can we apply this for the benefit of literary research? Le fait que la plupart des contributions proposées portent sur la littérature contemporaine et sont nourries des réflexions sur les transformations récentes du modèle familial a conduit à réfléchir sur la congruence entre le regard qu’une partie de la sociologie porte sur l’individu dans la famille et la littérature comme instrument privilégié d’un « faire croire » à la singularité des parcours individuels. Le dernier tiers de cette introduction présente les différentes contributions. This introduction outlines the aim of this volume by clarifying its initial approach: “making or unmaking family with literature”, a concept developed from studies of literature in the Ancien Régime and the premise that through literature we act s in the social world. The fact that most contributions focus on contemporary literature and engage with reflections on recent transformations of the family model prompted us to examine the alignment between certain strands of family sociology—particularly their emphasis on contextualized individualism—and the role of literature as a means of “making us believe” in the uniqueness of individual life trajectories. The final third of this introduction is devoted to presenting the various contributions included in the volume.
