Brazil has a large territorial area, which contains a diversity of areas potentially suitable for wine production. However, until the 1970s, a single wine region (Serra Gaúcha in the state of Rio Grande do Sul) was responsible for almost all the Brazilian wine production. From then, and until these years of the XXI century, there was an expansion of vine cultivation. Currently, the map of the Brazilian wine regions is more complex, with at least eight poles of production. There are also a large number of wineries in many municipalities across the country, which are important because they may be the embryos of new wine-growing regions. The transformations verified in the regions also extended to the wines. There are currently around one thousand and two hundred wineries in at least fourteen states of the federation, which mainly produce still wines (reds, whites and rosés) and sparkling wines (traditional and muscat). This article shows the essential Brazilian production of ‘fine wines’ by region, considering cultivated varieties and characteristics of the main types and styles of wines produced in each one of them.

Vinhos tropicais do semiárido do Brasil

Tropical wines are produced in winegrowing regions where vines can have more than one cycle per year and at least one harvest. The main factor contributing to this viticulture from low latitudes are: high temperatures throughout the year, rainfall level with moderate or deficient water supply, abundant solar radiation and water availability for irrigation. Continuous cycle happen and is the producer who decides when to prune and to harvest, according to rainfall season, market demands, physical structure and wine types elaborated. In the São Francisco Valley, Northeastern Brazil, tropical wines are being produced since the last thirty years. Viticulture practiced in the region is one of the most technified worldwide, because require high degree of knowledge of the viticulturists and technicians, for field management, as well as knowledges for enologists during winemaking. The region produce fine sparkling wines - dry or semi-dry, sweet muscat sparkling, young and aging still reds and young still whites, besides table wines, recently. In this article will be presented characteristics of this young and different vitiviniculture, as compared to that from traditional countries, as well as results of researches carried out in the region in the last fifteen years, in partnership with wineries.
