      <link>http://preo.ube.fr/textesetcontextes/index.php?id=5390</link>
This contribution analyzes the practice of clothing repair in the context the hygienist movement which developed in France during the second half of the nineteenth century. The first part focuses on domestic science, and more specifically on women as the primary custodians of domestic science within the household. An analysis of domestic economy books and women's magazines provides a means to understand the norms proposed to housewives at the end of the nineteenth century. Indeed, many of these works reveal a large range of techniques for managing the household, offering wise advice on optimizing domestic goods. Among these recommendations, mending clothes stands out as a fundamental element and an essential skill for housewives, ensuring both the comfort and respectability of the home and the family. Considered both an economic and moral necessity, clothing repair is also part of a personal and family care approach within a context marked by the “hygienization” of daily life. This idea serves as the central focus of the article's second part, which confronts the notion that clothing repair is tied to broader societal concerns, where domestic order and appearance contribute to well-being and to the modernization of hygienic practices in a rapidly changing society. </description>
