http://preo.ube.fr/textesetcontextes/index.php?id=1111 À l’instar de la majorité de ses textes en prose, L’Enlèvement de Joseph von Eichendorff relate l’histoire d’une double quête identitaire, celle de Léontine et celle de Gaston, en poussant à son paroxysme la confusion et les malentendus dus à des erreurs d’identification. Le présent article s’interroge ainsi sur les mécanismes de ce brouillage identitaire en analysant pour ce faire les désignateurs, les modes de représentation du discours, et autres caractérisations génératrices d’ambiguïté. Ce faisant, la question se pose de savoir si les erreurs d’identification des personnages ne trouvent pas leur source dans la difficulté de l’être à se définir lui-même, à affirmer son identité. Au travers du personnage du comte Gaston se donne ainsi à lire une situation de schizophrénie, une quête de soi qui est en même temps quête esthétique. Like most prose works by this famous German writer, Joseph von Eichendorff’s The Abduction (Die Entführung) is a story about two quests for identity, namely that of Léontine and that of Gaston. The plot reaches its climax through the confusion and the misunderstandings resulting from erroneous identifications. The present article deals with the mechanisms of this identity blurring and analyses several forms of designators, reported speech, and other ambiguity-generating literary devices. In doing so, it appears that errors of identification show how difficult it is for the characters to define and assert their identities. Their identities are in danger, which leads to schizophrenic situations. The last part of the essay considers the end of this quest for identity, which is also a quest for a new understanding of romanticism.
