L’appellation iconographique d’origine ayant perdu la fonction définitoire d’autorité et de reconnaissance (naming et labelling), on est amené à se demander si elle peut néanmoins continuer d’exister sous une forme culturelle sécularisée sans avoir à être nommée. L’analyse du roman de Tracy Chevalier, Girl with a Pearl Earring (1999), et de son adaptation au cinéma par Peter Webber (2003), permet de dégager la forme indiciaire d’une Annonciation, intégrée dans la trame indissociablement visuelle et narrative d’un portrait de femme anonyme de Vermeer. Ce tableau met aujourd’hui en évidence un mode d’interpellation (addressing) des lecteurs et spectateurs, convoqués pour rendre compte d’un effet de présence invisible. It seems that the Annunciation is totally lost to the world today. Original iconographic representations being thus deprived of their authoritative function of definition and recognition (naming and labelling), it is interesting to examine if the Annunciation can still exist under a secular form without being designated as such. We aim to show that a form of Annunciation may be traced in Tracy Chevalier’s novel Girl with a Pearl Earring (1999) and in its film adaptation by Peter Webber (2003) through Vermeer’s portrait of an anonymous young woman. This portrait, which is visual as much as narrative, addresses (addressing) both readers and viewers who are invited to become aware of an invisible presence.
