Nous nous interrogeons, dans notre contribution, sur la dynamique tout à fait particulière que crée la traduction en français d’un texte écrit en allemand - l’essai sur l’Oeuvre d’art à l’époque de sa reproductibilité technique - non pas par un traducteur extérieur, mais par son auteur lui-même. Ce cas nous paraît hautement intéressant, dans la mesure où il met en évidence une interaction complexe entre les deux langues. Nous constatons des déplacements sémantiques et des glissements de sens qui, loin d’être innocents, finissent par changer le sens du texte à des endroits stratégiques. La comparaison concrète des deux versions de l’essai met alors en évidence un durcissement idéologique et un ton plus radical de la version française que Benjamin assume pleinement. Any translation stimulates a circulation of sense from one language to another and gets two linguistic systems and two cultural contexts to interact. In our article, we will be exploring the special dynamics that are induced by the French translation of a German text, -Walter Benjamin’s The work of art in the age of mechanical reproduction – not by an external translator, but by it’s author himself. This case is very interesting as it is based on a complex interaction between two languages. One can observe semantic displacements who are all but innocent and result in changing the text’s sense at strategically important places. Our comparison of the two textual versions shows an ideological radicalisation in the French version which Benjamin thoroughly approves.
