Toute sa vie, cette « âme aux deux patries », comme l’indique le titre d’un de ses livres, s’est battue pour la réconciliation durable entre la France et l’Allemagne. Rebelle dès son plus jeune âge, grande autodidacte, elle s’exilera à plusieurs reprises pour conserver sa liberté de penser, d’action et d’écriture. En période de guerre, dans les deux pays, son appel à la raison est mal perçu et lui vaut de violentes attaques. Sa démarche intuitive et subjective, son esprit fougueux et indiscipliné, son infatigable combat pour le rapprochement de ses deux patries font d’elle un personnage fascinant par ses contradictions, son enthousiasme, son caractère à la fois intransigeant au niveau politique et sensible au niveau humain. Nous étudierons de plus près son bilinguisme, les images et stéréotypes véhiculés dans son discours et sa conception d’une complémentarité de la France et de l’Allemagne visant à surmonter les différences et à forger la base de l’Europe. Annette Kolb always felt herself to be between two peoples, two languages, two cultures and to have two native countries and languages. Throughout her life, this “soul with two fatherlands” as she refers to herself in the title of one of her books, strove for a lasting reconciliation between France and Germany. A born rebel, essentially self-taught, she voluntarily went into exile several times in order to preserve her freedom of thought, action and writing. In wartime, in both countries her appeals to reason made her unpopular, provoking violent attacks. Her intuitive and subjective approach, her fiery and undisciplined mind and her unrelenting crusade for the reconciliation of her two native countries made for a personality that is fascinating by virtue of its contradictions, its enthusiasm, its political intransigence and its human sensitivity.
