Trois historiennes ont démontré que le collectionnisme propre aux maisons de poupées n’était pas sans lien avec celui des cabinets de curiosités contemporains. En effet, cabinets de curiosités comme maisons de poupées intégraient des matériaux, spécimens et produits venus de colonies ou de comptoirs. Dans la lignée de ces travaux, cet article explore dans quelle mesure l’Empire britannique a façonné l’apparence des maisons de poupées et à plus grande échelle, celle de l’espace domestique britannique. En effet, les maisons de poupées anglaises n’auraient pas existé sous cette forme sans l’Empire. D’une part, la fortune de plusieurs familles ayant commandé ces objets au xviiie, reposait sur l’existence de celui-ci. D’autre part, les réseaux impériaux fournissaient de nombreux matériaux et produits utilisés dans la fabrication des maisons de poupées sans compter des apports culturels et techniques qui influencèrent tant les artisans britanniques que les femmes qui assemblaient des maisons de poupées. Eighteenth-century dollhouses were collections assembled by wealthy adult women born in the Netherlands and England. Three historians have recently shown that the assemblage of a dollhouse was not dissimilar to that of a cabinet of curiosities. Both cabinets of curiosities and dollhouses incorporated materials, specimens and products imported from colonies and trading posts. In keeping with their work, this chapter explores the extent to which the shape and materiality of eighteenth-century dollhouses – and on a larger scale the British domestic spaces they represented – depended on British colonies and global trade. On the one hand, the fortunes of several families were founded in the British Empire. La passion et la quête de la vérité ont intensément occupé l’esprit et le corps de la poétesse. L’essence même de son travail est une sorte d’imbroglio de sensibilité, d’amour du vers, d’une subjectivité profonde et de sincérité intellectuelle et poétique considérable. Plath offre une préoccupation permanente de la manière dont il faut habiter le monde et son intimité. La perception plathienne selon laquelle l’existence ne peut pas se concevoir sans un rapport quasi mystique à l’imagination et à la vérité suggère que son parcours se pare d’une dimension phénoménologique. On ne peut donc pas limiter l’analyse de son travail à un courant ni réduire sa créativité à une pure vision aliénée de soi que la poétesse ne pouvait conjurer. Dès lors, prendre en compte son engagement pour l’émancipation et en même temps sa fascination pour l’extrême revient à accepter l’idée que la portée de son travail ne peut se saisir qu’en ouvrant sa poésie à d’autres entrées proposées dans cet article. This article analyzes Sylvia Plath’s poetic journey, an eminently powerful body of work that derives its force from both the variety of identity-related themes it presents and the intimacy it offers. The passion and the pursuit of truth took a steadfast hold of the poet’s body and mind. The essence of her work is a kind of imbroglio of sensitivity, love of verse, deep subjectivity and unparalleled intellectual and poetic sincerity. Plath demonstrates a constant preoccupation with how to be present in the world and how to live out intimacy. Indeed, the Plathian worldview suggests that existence can only be understood through a quasi-mystical relationship to imagination and truth, a vision which imbued her work with a phenomenological dimension. The analysis of her work cannot, therefore, be limited to a single theoretical trend – nor can her creativity be reduced merely to the vision of the alienated self that the poet was unable to ward off. Elle incarne de multiples « entre-deux », liés autant à sa fonction qu’à son parcours personnel. Dans ces entretiens, elle évoque l’exercice de son magistère, en tant que femme, travaillant dans des quartiers pauvres, au sein de l’Église officielle en Angleterre. Elle revient également sur sa façon de concilier cette fonction avec sa formation scientifique initiale et son début de carrière dans l’industrie pétrolière.
