La interpretación del silencio como ausencia o interrupción en el discurso sonoro nos permite considerar la escultura como un discurso plástico construido a partir de materia –sonido– y vacíos o ausencia de esta materia –silencios–. En las Cajas metafísicas de Oteiza, la materia se convierte en mero accesorio para la consecución de un vacío que deviene esencia y núcleo de la escultura. Ese vacío remite simbólicamente a la nada, el espacio sagrado: un no-lugar de protección, un silencio en el que el individuo trasciende la dimensión espacio-temporal y accede a la inmortalidad. The analysis of plastic silence requires the establishment of a correspondence among different artistic languages. The interpretation of silence as the absence or interruption of talking speech allows sculpture to be explored as a plastic language made of matter—sound—and space or absence of matter—silence. In Cajas Metafísicas—Metaphysical Boxes—by Jorge Oteiza, matter becomes secondary while the space contained in it becomes the essence and heart of the sculpture. This space connects symbolically with the void, the sacred space: a non-place of protection, a silence in which the individual goes beyond space and time and gains immortality.
