Elle revisite également la figure du détective par une redéfinition des frontières du privé et du public et une critique de la communication de masse. Cette critique s’accompagne d’une vision très noire des rapports sociaux, qui constitue une actualisation du discours tenu dans le genre sur ces rapports. Through the character of Cormoran Strike, JK Rowling, using the pen name of Robert Galbraith, swerves away from her previous novelistic writings exemplified in the Harry Potter series, and adopts a more realistic approach. She also redefines the detective figure through a new representation of the boundaries between the public and the private spheres and articulates a critique of mass communication.
