La constellation des jardins qui parsèment le récit permet d’effectuer une relecture écopoétique de l’œuvre. Si la vision communément admise des jardins urbains est celle d’un lieu anthropocentré fonctionnant par et pour l’humain, il accède à une dimension tout autre dans Les Misérables.En effet, dans ce chef-d’œuvre de la misère urbaine, la nature des jardins est non seulement le point de départ d’une réflexion sur le rapport entretenu entre la nature et l’humanité, mais également l’espace où les relations entre humains et non-humains sont horizontalement décrites. Alors que le texte multiplie les lieux géographiques, il semble que les nœuds du récit se nouent et se dénouent au sein ou à la lisière de jardins. Ces derniers fonctionnent de manière ambivalente avec les personnages, se détachent des archétypes littéraires et classiques et la nature s’y exprime librement, sans donner l’impression systématique d’être contenue ou maîtrisée. Ainsi, des basculements s’opèrent, les humains se retrouvant maîtrisés et dominés par les saisons et la nature urbaine avec laquelle ils vivent. La manière kaléidoscopique dont Hugo écrit la nature participe à l’enchantement qui entoure et constitue les scènes rattachées aux jardins. Invariablement, des scènes de méditation, d’amour, de communion, doublent l’embellissement du jardin par les mains du jardinier ou la force des saisons, d’une sublimation de l’âme par la compréhension de son appartenance au cosmos. Dans ces jardins, la nature permet aux humains de penser et comprendre à la fois l’unité du monde et la manière dont sa nécessaire harmonie permet de toucher à l’infini et au cosmos.
