Son œuvre de SF, publiée après sa mort, comporte une sélection de trente-deux nouvelles et un roman. Le tout constitue dans la version française le cycle des Seigneurs de l’Instrumentalité : une saga de l’humanité couvrant la période de 1945 à 16500 après J.-C. L’ouvrage est à la fois une histoire du futur et un livre-univers qui tire son originalité d’éléments de de style qui confèrent aux récits une atmosphère légendaire propre aux mythes.Les thèmes majeurs du cycle (la « redécouverte de l’humanité », la réhabilitation des « sous-êtres », le périple initiatique de Rod McBan dans Norstralia) comportent des caractères narratologiques qui apparentent leur exposé à la mythologie (incipit de fables, intertextualité, animaux parlants, ambivalences et paradoxes, mouvements dialectiques, temporalité). S’y ajoutent un polylinguisme dans l’onomastique et des croisements de codes entre les aires asiatiques et occidentales qui ajoutent au sense of wonder entretenu par les récits.On s’intéresse ici plus particulièrement aux régimes symboliques et aux structures archétypales de l’imaginaire de l’auteur, ainsi qu’à la signifiance de quelques-unes des images. Dans le contexte des années 50 et 60, cette approche permet de mieux préciser l’idéologie et l’éthique de Cordwainer Smith, auteur chez qui la tension religieuse et une forte empathie sont manifestes. The American writer Paul Linebarger (1913-1966) began publishing under the pseudonym of Cordwainer Smith in the 1960s but met with limited editorial success. His SF work, published after his death, includes a selection of thirty-two short stories and one novel. The whole constitutes is known as the cycle of The Rediscovery of Man, a saga of humanity covering the period from 1945 to 16500 AD. The work is both a history of the future and a book-universe, drawing its originality from elements of form and style that give the stories a legendary atmosphere typical of myths.The major themes of the cycle (the ‘Rediscovery of Mankind’, the rehabilitation of the ‘under-people’, the initiatory journey of Rod McBan in Norstralia) include narratological characters that make their presentation similar to mythology (fable incipits, intertextuality, talking animals, ambivalences and paradoxes, dialectical movements, temporality). Added to this is a polylingualism in the onomastics and the crossing of codes between Asian and Western areas that add to the sense of wonder conferred by the stories.We will be interested in the symbolic regimes and archetypal structures of the author’s imagination, as well as in the significance of some of the images.
