Tour à tour céleste, romantique, symboliste, puis couleur du deuil, le bleu était pour Burne-Jones ‘la plus belle couleur au monde’. De nombreux éléments contextuels portant sur la biographie de l’artiste, sur l’histoire de l’art, et sur l’histoire des sciences (notamment la chimie) sont convoqués afin de suivre étape par étape la dérive monochromatique de Burne-Jones. Cette méthodologie interdisciplinaire permettra de mieux appréhender les multiples connotations associées à la couleur bleue dans l’œuvre de Burne-Jones, et de les situer dans la ‘révolution chromatique’ qui a marqué la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Through the study of four decades of pictorial production by the English painter Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898), this article analyses the progressively dominant presence of blue. In turn, heavenly, romantic, symbolist and then the colour of mourning, blue was for Burne-Jones ‘the most beautiful colour in the world’. Many contextual elements about the artist’s biography, the history of art, and the history of science (especially chemistry) are brought together in order to follow step by step the monochromatic drift of Burne-Jones.
