In Senzaterra (2008) Evelina Santangelo depicts the economic and social situation in a Sicilian village, against the background of an influx of illegal migrants. The novel involves two characters, Gaetano and Ali, representing respectively the Italian emigrant, torn between leaving or remaining, and the illegal immigrant. While no coming together seems possible between Italians and illegal migrants, the fates of Gaetano and Ali become intertwined: in her narrative Evelina Santangelo conjures up a space in which the two main characters eventually end up on the same side of the barrier.
