À travers les écrits d’artistes et d’historiens de l’art de la première moitié du XXe siècle et en particulier l’entre-deux-guerres, cet article s’intéresse à des formes situées entre figuration et plastique pure. Revenant plus spécifiquement sur le cas des artistes musicalistes, plusieurs d’entre eux voient l’abstraction non pas seulement comme une tendance proprement moderne mais qui se retrouve dans diverses traditions anciennes et extra-occidentales. As recommended by geographers Julie Le Gall and Lionel Rougé, we must dare to apply the in-between concept to the history of art, and more specifically to the history of abstract art. Through the writings of artists and art historians from the first half of the twentieth century, and particularly from the inter-war period, this article deals with forms situated between figuration and pure plasticity.
