Après avoir publié de nombreuses tragédies traitant souvent de sujets tirés de l’histoire antique – Cleopatra (1660), Agrippina (1665), ou Sophonisbe (1680) –, Lohenstein, pour ce roman, s’est intéressé en particulier aux écrits de Tacite et de Velleius Paterculus, afin de donner sa vision personnelle du personnage d’Arminius (Hermann) et de la confrontation entre le monde latin et le monde germanique. Lohenstein’s (1635-1683) posthumous novel Groβmüthiger Feldherr Arminius published in 1689-1690 is the last text this Silesian author worked on in his final years.
