Perçu comme l’instrument de Satan, ce personnage devient l’ennemi de la foi tant et si bien que quiconque s’oppose au dogme établi, devient à son tour un antéchrist. Or l’Antéchrist, empli du pouvoir satanique, est capable de réaliser des prodiges, souvent associés aux pratiques magiques. Dès lors, le christianisme fait de l’étude et de la pratique de la magie une activité dangereuse pour le salut de l’âme. Or, les différents textes magiques, fortement imprégnés d’une valeur mystique et spirituelle, soulignent effectivement le danger qu’il y a à s’adonner à de telles pratiques sans maîtriser les arts libéraux. L’ignorance destructrice devient alors la véritable marque de l’Antéchrist. The image of the Antichrist has been an inspiration for literary, hagiographic, and artistic works. Perceived as the instrument of Satan, the Antichrist became the enemy of faith to such a degree that anyone opposing to the established dogma was, in turn, taxed as an Antichrist. At the same time, filled with Satanic power, the Antichrist was also perceived as capable of working wonders through practices which are often associated with those of magic. Christianity has accordingly considered the study and the practice of magic as threats to the salvation of the soul. The deeply spiritual and mystical thought used in magic thus also effectively underline the risks involved in devoting oneself to such an exercise without a mastery of the liberal arts.
