À partir de l’exemple de Holden Caulfield, figure centrale du roman de J. D. Salinger L’Attrape-cœurs, nous verrons comment un personnage peut tout à la fois changer et rester identique d’une lecture à une autre. Seront distingués le travail de l’écrivain pour donner à son personnage une identité que nous pouvons qualifier d’intrinsèque, et le rôle joué par le lecteur dans l’actualisation de ce même personnage. La relation lecteur-personnage sera aussi étudiée, avant se pencher sur un exemple concret de réappropriation du personnage de Holden par Bret Easton Ellis dans son premier roman. This article focuses on the shifting identities of fiction characters from their creation to the way they are received by a specific reader, but also on the way they can be re-used by later writers who add a personal touch to the original creation. With the example of Holden Caulfield, the main figure of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, the aim is to show how a character can alternately change and remain identical from one reading to the next. A distinction will be made between the work of the author who is responsible for his character’s intrinsic identity, and the part played by the reader in the actualization of that same character. The article shall also deal with the relation between reader and character, before examining the way Bret Easton Ellis chose to reuse the character of Holden in his first novel, updating him to some extent.
