Dans ses tableaux, elle exprime la symbiose de l’homme avec la nature : mélancolie des paysages d’Allemagne du Nord, marais, canaux, dunes, tourbières, frêles bouleaux, pins puissants – vieillards aux mains noueuses qui ont quelque chose d’émouvant, mais toujours empreints d’une grande dignité. L’intimité avec la nature est constamment liée à une composante féminine : la femme-mère, la femme-terre, la femme réceptacle de l’enfant comme de l’art. Les enfants aux grands yeux sombres ne sourient jamais ; savent-ils seulement jouer ? Peintre hors-normes à son époque, c’est des décennies plus tard qu’on la connaît mieux. Her life was short (1876-1907), but intense and rich, spent amongst the colony of painters in Worpswede, near Bremen, her many friendships, but one especially, Rainer Maria Rilke – with whom she had an abundant correspondence – has meant that, for a long time, her creativity was relegated to second plan. She expressed the symbiosis of men and nature: the melancholy of the landscapes in Northern Germany, marshes, canals, turf-moors, frail birch-trees, strong pine-trees amongst them, old men and women with knotty hands who are very touching, but are also very dignified. The intimacy with nature is constantly tied into the female aspect of women as mothers, women as earth, women as receptacles for the child and for art; children with big dark eyes, never smiling.
